Katsushika Hokusai, born in Tokyo in 1760 was fascinated by water and mountains but started an apprenticeship as a block carver at the age of 15. Hokusai became particularly famous for his picture series 36 Views Of Mount Fuji. From this comes his most famous picture The Big Wave Off The Coast at Kanagawa.
